Assured Digital Signage Introduces the Joan ePaper Badge
Assured Digital Signage is proud to introduce and sell Joan‘s (formerly known as Visionect) new Joan ePaper Badge, a reusable digital name badge that syncs with Joan’s visitor management platform to instantly display visitor details such as name, company, photo and check-in information. It is the latest addition to our range of E-ink displays, and a sustainable alternative to printed paper and plastic badges for corporate offices, receptions, hospitality venues and events. It is a truly unique display: unlike most E-ink screens, it is designed to be worn rather than mounted, making it perfect for visitor check-in at busy receptions, staff and contractor ID, and conferences, trade shows and corporate events where hundreds of guests need a smart, professional badge.
The badge uses a 4-inch, four-colour E-ink screen in black, white, red and yellow, with a sharp 528 x 768 pixel resolution at 236 PPI. Like the other battery powered displays we supply, it only uses power when the image changes, running for around 200 days on a single charge (approximately 700 updates) and storing up to six images. It recharges wirelessly using the Qi standard, with a red LED charging light.
First launched in February 2026 for visitor check-in, the Joan ePaper Badge has already drawn strong interest at major industry shows such as Integrated Systems Europe and InfoComm. Joan is now expanding the badge into employee ID and event badges, so one smart badge can hold a person’s details and credentials and simply be updated whenever the record behind it changes, rather than being reprinted. Whatever the job, it is the same hardware underneath, so badges can be reassigned whenever needs change with no new hardware to buy.
One Badge, Three Uses
Visitor Badges
The badge becomes the final step of your visitor registration process rather than a separate task. Once a visit is registered, whether through a host invite or a name on a calendar, that information carries straight onto the badge. When the visitor checks in at the reception kiosk or tablet, a badge within Bluetooth range updates itself with their name, company, photo and host in seconds, and a small LED confirms the update. The host is notified automatically, and when the visitor leaves they simply return the badge to its dock, where it clears itself ready for the next guest. There is no label printer to maintain, no manual entry at reception and no paper badge thrown away after a single use. If a badge is not returned at the end of a visit, it is flagged automatically.
Employee Badges
Due to become available in October 2026, employee badges replace the traditional printed plastic ID card. An office or HR manager connects the badges in the Joan Mobile App, chooses a company template and assigns them directly from the Joan user directory, individually, by team or in batches,, so a new starter’s badge is ready on their first day. If a photo, name or job title changes, the update reaches the badge over Bluetooth the next time it is nearby, so there is no reprint order needed, and a lost badge can be revoked immediately. Because each badge carries an NFC chip, it can also be used to open doors where the building’s access control system supports it, meaning staff carry one badge instead of an ID card plus a separate RFID access card (additional integration required).
Event Badges
Event badges, already in trials with the first customers running corporate events, are owned by the organiser rather than the wearer. Hundreds of badges can be written from the attendee list before the doors open, and walk-in guests go through the same fast process as pre-registered delegates, with no separate queue and no reprint desk. Each badge can show more than a name, such as company, role or session access, pulled straight from the registration data, and a misspelt name or substitute delegate is corrected with a quick re-sync. After the event the badges are collected, cleared, recharged and reused at the next conference, trade show or large event, and the system scales to more than 1,000 attendees.
For organisations that want the same experience at the door of every meeting room, the badges sit alongside Joan’s E-ink room booking displays, including the Joan 6 Pro and Joan 13 Pro, all managed from the same Joan platform. You can see the full range on our Joan commercial displays page.
Across all three uses, layouts are fully customisable, giving you control over exactly what appears on each badge, from your company logo and photos to departments or access levels. Powered by Bluetooth Low Energy with universal iOS and Android compatibility, the badges support real-time updates within a 10 to 30 metre range.
